"As a directly impacted person, attending the public education conversation on “Mindfulness Practices and Abolitionist Pedagogy”, blessed me in ways I didn't even know I needed. When the speaker Johari stated, 'I saw so much beauty when I went to Statesville, it filled a void in my psyche that I hadn't realized until last night.

I realized that I'm still healing from the trauma of my wrongful conviction and incarceration.  Directly Impacted people leave the carceral space feeling less than and not something of beauty.

Dr. Johari's words identified the subconscious self-image forced upon me by the carceral system, and I was prompted to acknowledge it and then actively begin working to cast it down.  We are all beautiful and we need not ever forget that."
